MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
“How are you?” a friend asked the other day. “I’m well, thanks,” I replied more or less automatically. The answers to such ordinary questions come easily but when you think about it you realize what an audacious statement it is to say “I am well.” For most of us, to be well means to be physically healthy, but there is much more to wellness than this. According to the KEYS Region’s Community Wellness Coalition, wellness implies wholeness across a variety of interconnected dimensions: physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social, cultural, occupational, financial/material, and environmental. Is this what we mean when we say “I am well”? How many of us really are well in this complete sense? Some of these dimensions go beyond the wellbeing of the individual, of course, reflecting the wellness of families and communities. In reality, it is not just individuals who seek wellness; it is also the groups to which we belong. It is easier to be well if your family is well; easier to ensure a family’s well-being if the community embracing that family is well. The quality of our personal well-being improves as the well-being of our families and of the community at large improves.
You may look at a handsome brochure like the one you are holding now and see programs for individuals: arts and crafts programs, sports programs, children’s programs, enrichment programs, etc. But the mission of the Parks and Recreation Department is greater than this. It is to promote the health and wellness of the Town not just as such concepts pertain to individuals but as they pertain to families and to the community in all its diversity. It is my hope, as Chair of the Parks and Recreation Board, that participation in the programs in this summer’s catalogue will help you achieve the benefits you are seeking but also that your participation will contribute to the well-being of the community. Please encourage others you know to sign-up. Widespread participation will benefit us all.
And the next time someone asks: “How are you?” I hope you’ll be able to say: “I’m well, thanks really well” and wholly mean it. Have a safe and healthy summer!
Ron McAllister, Chair
