They are there to insure that our beaches are safe and well managed and we encourage you to discuss any concerns or suggestions you have with them. This year’s program will begin on June 22nd and run through September 3rd. Guards are on duty between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm daily. Maine Healthy Beaches Program Maine’s coastal beaches are known worldwide for their natural, pristine beauty and of course, great swimming! The Town of York participates in the Maine Healthy Beaches Program. This is part of a larger statewide effort to insure healthy, informed opportunities for swimming and other recreational water activities along the coast of Maine. Our beaches are tested weekly at various locations in order to provide a standardized quality-assured monitoring and notification system. For more information about York’s beaches you may call the Parks and Recreation office or visit the Maine Healthy Beaches web site at www.mainehealthybeaches.org. BEACH PARKING AND PUBLIC RESTROOMS Parking meters are in effect at Short Sands and Long Sands Beaches from May 15th to October 15th daily, between the hours of 8:00 am and 10:00 pm. Meter fees are 25 cents for fifteen minutes. Resident parking stickers are accepted at all metered locations on Long Sands Beach. They are not accepted at Short Sands Beach. Resident Permit Parking Stickers can be purchased for $25 and are good through the entire season at Long Sands, Cape Neddick and Harbor Beach. Resident stickers are required at Cape Neddick and York Harbor Beach. The cost for a resident sticker if you are 65 or older is $12. The Short Sands Restroom facility is open daily from mid April to October 15th. Long Sands and Harbor Beach restrooms are open daily from May 5th through October 15th. Dogs are prohibited on the beach from May 20th to September 20th between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm. All dogs must be on a leash between 6:00 pm and sunrise. Dogs are allowed off-leash from sunrise to 8:00 am as long as the dog is under the voice control of its owner or responsible party. Owners must carry leashes at all times and pick up and dispose of all animal waste. Our community has one of the most beautiful lighthouse parks in the country. The preservation and up-keep of this historic landmark is extremely important and is largely dependant on community volunteers. Under the watchful eye of the Sohier Park Committee, the Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for maintenance and operations at the Park. Funding is primarily derived from a small gift shop, which is located in the Welcome Center at the park. The Center is open daily from May 4th through Columbus Day. Restrooms are open daily 7:00 am 7:00 pm.. NUBBLE LIGHT AMBASSADORS PROGRAM Volunteers Needed! Each year the Welcome Center is staffed with friendly, enthusiastic volunteers eager to greet visitors, answer questions about the park and lighthouse, sell merchandise and promote the “Friends of Nubble Light Program”. Volunteers work one, three-hour shift per week and we are always looking for an extra hand. So if you have the time and would enjoy giving to a worthy cause, we encourage you to consider this unique opportunity. For more information on the ambassadors program please call the Parks and Recreation Department at 363-1040. For the past several years the Sohier Park Committee has been working with Richardson and Associates Landscape Architects on a master plan for the park. The plan addresses traffic flow, parking, handicapped accessibility, erosion control, drainage and landscaping. During this past year the plan underwent extensive review by the Planning Board and the Board of Selectmen. It was unanimously approved by both committees and has been forwarded to the voters for your approval at the May referendum. The vote does not request funding, it simply asks voters to adopt the plan for future improvements. I believe our staff has done a particularly good job developing this year’s program line-up and we are anxious to get the season under way. As you read through this brochure please pay particular attention to program dates and registration deadlines. We serve a large number of people in many activities and timely registration helps us with program organization and management. We encourage parents to sit down with their children and read this brochure together. When choosing programs try and develop a balance between fun, social interaction and physical activity. Keep in mind that many of the habits we learn as children are carried into our adult lives and encouraging an active, healthy lifestyle may well be the greatest gift you can give your children. Along these lines it’s important to mention the obesity issue that is plaguing our country today. Unhealthy eating habits combined with inactive lifestyles are the primary reasons for this condition. While we leave nutrition to the experts, we are able to help keep you and your family active. So whether it’s a hike at Mount Agamenticus, a walk on the beach, or one of the many recreation programs we have to offer, consider the benefits. I would like to recognize the business community in York for their continued support. Each business displayed in this brochure has contributed to our summer program. These small businesses are called upon frequently to support community activities and we encourage you to support them whenever possible. I would like to give special recognition to Jim Stott and Jonathan King of Stonewall Kitchen for their outstanding contribution this year. Stonewall has donated $8,000 to fund recreation program scholarships for needy families. These funds are sure to put smiles on the faces of many York children. On behalf of the Town of York I would like to offer Jim and Jonathan a heartfelt thank you for their amazing donation and when you see them around town this summer, I encourage you to do the same. We continue to enjoy a unique community partnership with York Hospital. For over a decade they have been our largest single supporter, working with us to create new programs and integrate health and wellness into existing programs. In addition to their annual support they recently purchased nearly $5,000 in equipment for the new community playground to be constructed at the Bog Road Recreation Area this summer. I’d like to thank Jud Knox and the Board of Directors at York Hospital for believing in our programs and supporting our mission. Speaking of the playground, on Saturday June 9th, the Bog Road Playground Committee will be hosting a community build day to construct a new playground at the athletic field complex. The committee has raised $45,000 to purchase the equipment and is soliciting volunteers to help with the one day installation. This small committee has worked tirelessly for the past year and a half. Fundraising is hard work and they deserve a great deal of credit. Included in this brochure is information on the conservation work at Mount Agamenticus. The Town has been working with state, local, and non-profit landowners to protect this land and to balance wildlife and water quality along with sustainable recreation. There are many volunteer opportunities at Mount Agamenticus such as community work parties, adopt-a-trail programs and the creation and development of a friends group. For those interested, I encourage you to contact Robin Stanley, the Mount Agamenticus Conservation Coordinator. Robin has done a remarkable job leading the conservation effort at the Mountain and she relies heavily on community volunteers. There are also opportunities at Sohier Park and Nubble Light. Volunteers work as cashiers in the gift shop and also as ambassadors in the park. If you enjoy meeting people from all over the world, sharing the history of our lighthouse park and giving something back to your community, this may be just what you are looking for. For information on how to become a volunteer please call the Parks and Recreation office at 363-1040. In closing I would like to offer a special thank you to all the parents and volunteers who give their time to the youth in our community. I admire your willingness to get involved and truly appreciate your time and commitment to our parks and recreation programs. Sincerely, Michael Sullivan |
